Making a piped cushion cover

Follow our step by step guide showing you how to make a cushion cover.

Step 1

Step 1

You will need: 50cm square cushion pad, 45cm zip, 2m piping cord, matching thread.

Cut two pieces of fabric  56cm square, use the remaining fabric for your bias strips to cover the piping cord.  Check the design of your fabric as you may need to centre the design.

Step 2 Making piping

Step 2 Making piping

To make piping cut strips of fabric 5cm wide. Join the pieces together to make one continuous length. Cover the piping cord with this fabric and machine.

Step 3 Adding the zip

Step 3 Adding the zip

Overlock or zigzag stitch the back piece of the fabric, this is where your zip will be placed.  Place the zip on the reverse side of the back piece of fabric and machine into place.

Turn over to right side of fabric and machine zip onto this side as well as shown in photograph.

Step 4

Step 4

Place the piping around the reverse piece of cushion fabric, overlapping slightly to join, machine.  Also include the zip with this so that it is sandwiched between the fabric and the piping.

Next (keeping the zip open), pin the fabric right sides together and machine round the cushion cover.  Trim off any excess, overlock or zig zag edges to prevent fraying.

Turn out the right way and insert the cushion pad.
