Step 1: Decide Where to Fit the Blind
Many people ask should Roman blinds be fitted inside or outside the window recess? The answer is that Roman blinds can be installed either way, depending on your preference and your window frame:
- Inside the recess (inside mount): this gives a neat, fitted look. If mounting inside the recess, ensure there is enough depth to accommodate the blind and brackets. The blinds will need to be an accurate fit to sit neatly into the space.
- Outside the recess (outside mount): many people choose exterior mounts as it gives better light control and can make windows appear larger. If mounting outside the recess, measure beyond the window frame for maximum coverage. Choosing the right placement will not only enhance the look of your room but also give better coverage and privacy.
Step 2: Measure Accurately
Accurate measurements are crucial for a well-fitted blind:
- Inside Recess: Measure the width and drop of the recess in three places (top, middle, and bottom for width; left, middle, and right for drop). Use the smallest measurement to ensure the blind fits properly.
- Outside Recess: Measure the desired width and drop of the blind, adding extra to each side for better coverage.
Double-check all measurements before proceeding to avoid misalignment.
Step 3: How Do You Attach Roman Blinds to a Window?
- Hold the first bracket in position at the top of the window frame or wall.
- Use a pencil to mark where the screw holes will go.
- Repeat for the second bracket, ensuring they are level.
- If the blind is wide, install a central support bracket for stability.
- Drill pilot holes at the marked positions.
- Insert rawl plugs if necessary (for plaster or masonry walls).
- Screw the brackets into place securely.
- Line up the headrail with the installed brackets and push it into the spring brackets until it clicks into place.
- Attach the Velcro header strip from the top of the blind to the rail, ensuring a snug fit and smooth operation.
- Use a spirit level to confirm alignment before drilling.
Step 4: Test the Blind
- Gently pull the control chain or cord to raise and lower the blind.
- Ensure it operates smoothly and evenly.
- If needed, adjust the blind to ensure it sits straight and folds neatly.
