How to Make a Cushion Cover With a Cushion Panel

In this guide we will show you how to make a cushion cover using a cushion panel. With over 50 cushion panels to choose from, all you need to do is add a contrasting back fabric, and zip, then finish off with a cushion inner and you have your very own cushion. This project is suitable for both beginner sewers or a seasoned pro, and is a great option for a gift or the ultimate sofa accessory.

Cushion panels are a great way to inject some personality into your space with the added joy of making the cushion yourself. A cushion panel is the face of your cushion which can be sewn onto any backing fabric. For our cushion panel project, we’ve used the JF Vintage Velvet in Coral, but we have a fantastic range of fabrics suitable for the back of cushions, whether you want to opt for a plain fabric that picks out a colour in your space or a patterned fabric to make a statement.

What you will need:

  • Cushion panel
  • Fabric for back panel
  • Sewing machine with zip foot
  • Zip
  • Pin
  • Scissors
  • Cushion inner

First you need to cut your back fabric to be the same size as the cushion. Take your cushion panel and lay it flat on your back fabric of choice, pin them together to keep in place and use the panel as a template to cut around.

Now you’ve got your two fabric pieces. Place your cushion panel on your back panel, right sides together. Pin along the bottom edge of the fabric where your zip is going to go.

Using the longest straight stick on your machine, or a tacking stitch, sew the edge you’ve pinned. Once sewn, with an iron press the seam open.

Lay your zip, facing upwards, on the table. Align the zip between the seam you just created and pin in place. Using the zipper foot, stitch the zip in place using a standard-length stitch. Try to sew as close to the centre of the seam as possible without catching the zipper teeth.

Lay your panels flat and use a seam ripper to remove the tacking stitch you initially created - the zip will now be holding the fabric panels together. Unzip your zip to halfway, and align the panels right sides facing and pin together. Sew along your pinned edges.

Trim the corners diagonally of the top two corners, to allow for sharp corners to your cushion. Now turn the cushion inside out. To finish, simply insert your cushion inner into the cover and you have a completed cushion.
