How to Choose Children's Fabric

Choosing a fabric for your child's room should be fun and enjoyable. There are so many different fabrics to choose from you are bound to find one that suits your child's interests.

Nursery fabric

Choosing a children's fabric for your new baby is exciting. There are many designs to choose from and it can be difficult to know where to start. If you know whether you are going to have a boy or a girl it will be easier to make your choice, although you don't have to keep to the traditional choice of pink for a girl and blue for a boy.

You will have to decide if you want to use a pastel palette or a bold one. Bright colour are meant to stimulate a baby but you may want to use more relaxing pastel shades in the nursery and use bold ones in the playroom! Sophie Allport designs such as Bears and Balloons Natural fabric and Woodland Party Multi fabric are great choices for a childs nursery.

Safety must always be kept uppermost in your mind so make sure that any blinds you buy or have made comply with the latest legislation regarding cords.

Children's fabric for older children

Children's fabric for older children

As your child progresses from nursery to school age it is likely that they will begin to think that your original choice of nursery fabric is babyish and that they have outgrown it. They will probably have their own ideas of what they like.  They are now likely to choose a children's fabric that is bright and bold and there are lots of these around for example, Hide and Seek Jungle fabric which is a great animal themed fabric, or the Dino City Jungle fabric which is a playful design.

If you think that some of these children's fabrics are too garish then they could be used for cushions and you could use a plain or striped fabric such as Falmouth Stripe Sage fabric for curtains and bedding. This will also lengthen the life of the curtains as if you choose something that is popular today it may be out of favour in twelve months time so it is easier just to change the cushions and accessories when the inevitable happens!

Going into the teens

Whilst most teenagers will not think of themselves as children there are still children's fabrics around that will appeal to the young teen. In particular bold designs such as stars such as Funky Stars Blue fabric and stripes in bright reds and blues. Use these bold fabrics for curtains or as an upholstery fabric on items such as bean bags and floor cushions that they will love to lounge around on.

From birth to teens Just Fabrics offers many children's fabrics to choose from so whatever your style there will be a fun fabric for you and your child!
